TRAINING

My training philosophy involves a mix of understanding concepts and practical
application. Although I believe soft skills training has important value, especially
for young people, I find that I offer the most value when it comes to pulling out
the flipcharts and making a plan.

Being a trainer sometimes means getting your hands dirty.

One of the biggest issues that trainers face is the “takeaway.” How do you know that your participants will take what they have learned outside the training room and apply it to their real life? I tackle this in a two-step method.

First, I have to make the experience memorable, and the best way to do that is to heighten the emotions of the participants. Depending on the goal, the emotion could be joy, fear, reflection, or frustration. At that point, I utilize that feeling to motivate participants to take an active step in either maintaining or solving whatever issue is at hand. Then together we make a realistic action plan with deadlines and the group becomes accountable to each other.

Sometimes trainers can get emotional too.

Usually what I strive for is to have fun. I could not stand to be the boring trainer who talks for hours in front of a group of inactive participants. I make sure to encourage plenty of movement, speech, laughs, and creativity.

That doesn’t mean I can’t get serious. The movement frees the brain and allows participants to get outside their normal thinking patterns. This is where the magic happens.

Great minds think differently.

I strive to include creative methods and ideas that the participants have not experienced before. If I’ve seen a method or theory a million times, chances are, so have they. With each training I challenge myself to research and brainstorm how I can convey the information in a new, unexpected way.

Of course, I am going to get the best new ideas when I co-facilitate. The energy that can be created by bouncing and building thoughts with a partner is incredibly rewarding.
